So, you genuine bmw is made by a supplier. Nothing new there. But lets look at the price difference on FCPEuro :

Someone pencil ground the fuck out of the new one.

Looks like a used casting cleaned up with new bushings installed.

Plus they have a lifetime free replacement policy on everything they sell. Including wipers, brake pads, rotors, etc. FCP is great.

They are pretty nice. I've never had to replace stuff tho

Could be.

Yeah, it’s pretty common for OEM parts to be made by the same supplier who sells them with the OEM mark ground off for 1/3 the price.

This is par for the course. The markup between the OEM and “Genuine” is the dealer. I think they mark it up at least 100%.

I knew about it, but this was my 1st practical experience with it.
A friend who works for ZF said that they literally pull components from the line and grind off the OEM branding.

that can actually be breach of contract. Automakers generally pay all of the supplier’s engineering, development, and testing (ED&T) costs as well as the tooling costs. Which means the automaker- not the supplier- owns the rights to the part. it’s possible their agreement with BMW lets them do that, but I’ve not seen it. a supplier selling parts “out the door” to other parties would cause litigation to ensue.

I bought a vacuum pump for a Jetta recently that had the part number ground off as well. The story from the supplier was that the parts maker sells excess parts and grinds off the part numbers in order to allow the OEMs to keep their vibe. At $30 versus $115, I’d be inclined to congratulate myself and move on.

At a third of the price.

Thank you for this. I’ve never heard of this site.

FCP is pretty amazing. Lots of choice when it comes to manufacturers and their blog is fairly active. They seem to test OEM vs other brand parts and post about them on the blog.
And they have lifetime replacement!

I just bought a BMW steering angle sensor that was supposed to come w/ the marks removed and I definitely paid the “not BMW marked” price, but I got the part in a BMW box with BMW markings. Hurray!
